Affordable Housing for Extremely Impoverished Single Mothers

Extremely impoverished single-mother families refer to underprivileged families led by women as a result of loss of husband or divorce with annual per capita income less than RMB 4,000 in rural areas and below the minimum subsistence level in urban areas. Extremely impoverished single mothers who maintain such families are a particularly difficult group among vulnerable groups. For various reasons, there are still 19,000 extremely impoverished single-mother families in the economically underdeveloped areas of Guangdong province, who have no housing or are living in thatched or mud houses.

In 2009, the Heungkong Charitable Foundation and the Guangdong Women and Children's Foundation, taking extremely impoverished single-mother families as recipients, launched a project called the Affordable Housing for Extremely Impoverished Single-mother Families. The project offers RMB 10 thousand per affordable house for extremely impoverished single mother in a fair and sustainable way, so as to help single impoverished mothers to solve their most concerned, immediate and pragmatic housing problem and improve their living environment. By the end of 2011, a total of RMB 3 million was donated to subsidize 300 extremely impoverished single mothers to realize their dream of having a house to live in.
